Is Amazon Bad For Authors?

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The online retailer Amazon relentlessly uses its negotiating power to squeeze more advertising fees out of publishers, and at the same time they are driving down the retail price of books sold through their site. That combination is one of the reasons behind an industry-wide one-quarter drop in the size of the advances publishers are paying to authors for mid-list titles -- works that are expected to sell modestly, but might endure. This makes it harder for authors that haven't sold a blockbuster to earn a decent living from writing full-time. Has Amazon gone too far? Is there anything publishers can do to ensure they will stay in business? What are the best ways readers can support their favorite authors when shopping for books?
